24 Hour party person

“Ever think you’re having a bad day? Then console yourself by considering what a bad day entails for the world’s most celebrated and beleaguered counter-terrorist agent Jack Bauer, …So far, Bauer has seen his wife murdered by his lover, had his daughter kidnapped, become a heroin addict to infiltrate a drugs gang, and been forced to execute his own boss in order to avert a chemical attack by terrorists. He’s even been pronounced dead himself on a couple of occasions. And he is never allowed respite.

As the eagerly anticipated new series kicks off, it’s going to be just as gratifyingly ruthless. In the show, Bauer grapples with an apocalyptic plot over a 24-hour time frame, which divides into 24 episodes. Sutherland has described the cult series as ‘Dynasty on crack’, which is apposite; this time, two familiar faces … didn’t make it past the first hour.

At this rate, you have to ask yourself if even Jack is safe. Sutherland, 39, who has built an extraordinary career renaissance on his portrayal of the driven agent, refuses to offer any guarantees – even though he stars in and executive produces the shows.

‘I’ll be happy to die,’ he says, sounding relaxed at the prospect of his character’s demise. ‘In fact, it’s important to the show that Jack eventually dies. And that he does so when you least expect it. I’ve always said that if there comes a point in the show where to kill Jack is what serves the show best, then so be it, and I think every actor who has been on the show feels the same way about their role.’ …

… Just keep your fingers crossed he’s still with us by lunchtime.”

Movie to shoot this summer?

“Jack Bauer could be hitting the big screen as soon as later this year, according to various reports. The plans would involve shooting a movie version of 24 this summer, after the current fifth season wraps and before the sixth season airs in 2007 …

… ‘It’s certainly something that I’ve expressed an incredible amount of interest in doing,’ he [Kiefer] said. ‘It is something that Joel, Howard and Bob and I have all talked about. One of the real difficulties, … is that any time they got really close to having a great idea for a film, we needed it for episode 18, so there it went.’

‘I love playing the character and it’s something I care an awful lot about,’ Sutherland continued. ‘And I think certainly it is a genre of film that I have always loved as an audience person. I think there is an audience out there for that.’

… ‘I think there’s always a way to actually deal with an idea of 24 as a film that would be completely separate from 24 the television show. And by that I mean the characters could be different. They could be completely unrelated, and I think that that would still be effective. Obviously, it’s something that I would be very eager to do, and it requires a lot of other people to feel the same way.'”
