Season 6 UK DVD

The season 6 UK DVD was released on monday, with a lot less fan fare than usual it has to be said, as Prison Break Season 2 released a week earlier still takes up most of Fox’s promotional power.

And while you could question why this is, “not up to 24’s usual standard” etc., the list of extras does still look impressive and could well be the best set we’ve ever had if documentaries “Inside The Writers Room” & “Opening With A Bang” can live up to the 90 minute making of seen on the Season 2 release.

From what I can tell the UK Region 2 release carries exactly the same list of extras as the U.S. release due in December will. I’ll update this post if there’s any significant developments on that, and i’ll have a full review up on the site once my copy arrives.

S6 DVD News

News has sprung forth about the Season 6 DVD’s, as yesterday Fox released a Press Release and DVD cover image for the region 1 boxset. The special features list is quite impressive, including the now customary 12 episode commentaries, which is welcome news, although some of the choses for commentaries still baffle me and having no commentary on the final episode I think is a mistake. But it looks like they’ve attempting to make up for with the other extras, which include 25 deleted scenes, vieweable in three different ways. Also included is a “alternate ending”, which sounds very exciting, given the various rumours which where flying round the internet about ending for S6, all of which weren’t true, maybe we’ll find out they were “almost true”.

It should be noted that this is for the region 1 american release, I have no concrete info that these details will be the same for the UK R2 release, although that Fox can confirm these details almost a month before the UK release hopefully means every is ready to go on a UK boxset.

The UK release is the 1st of October while the US release is the 4th of December, follow link below for more details

Day Five DVD News

Here’s the PR Spin for the upcoming Day Five DVD Release …

“The excitement is building … , the critically acclaimed Emmy® and Golden Globe® award-winning phenomenal TV show. Available on November 6th 2006, Season 5 sees the team at CTU take high octane action and non-stop thrills and suspense to a new level. Season 5 is available as a single season box set (RRP:£49.99) or as part of a complete series to date box set with seasons 1-4 (RRP:£149.99).

The clock is ticking on another day in CTU and time is not on their side as the lives of millions are at risk from the devastating effect of terrorists plans. As the brains behind the days atrocities are slowly revealed, shocking revelations come to light about high powered government officials and their real agendas – will the country ever recover from the appalling betrayal of those who are charged with their safekeeping and well being…

No commercials. No waiting a week to watch the next gripping episode. No excuse not to go out and buy 24 Season 5 on DVD – the format 24 was made for!”

The extras include 12 cast and crew commentaries, 40 deleted scenes (with optional commentary), 4 featurettes. The region 2 dvd will likely include the Series 5 Prequel, and the region 1 will likely include a new Series 6 Prequel.

U.S. DVD strikes back

As predicted by various rumours and other murmurings, the upcoming (6th of December) U.S. release of series four will carry on the well-worn tradition of the region 1 dvd getting more extras than the region 2. The U.S. DVD will include no-less than 12 episode commentaries. 7:00AM – 8:00AM commentary by Joel Surnow and Mary Lynn Rajskub
12:00PM-1:00PM commentary by Joseph Hodges and Jon Cassar
1:00PM – 2:00PM commentary by Kim Raver and Joseph Hodges
2:00PM – 3:00PM commentary by Stephen Kornish and Peter Lenkov
3:00PM – 4:00PM commentary by Evan Katz and Shannon Doherty
4:00PM – 5:00PM commentary by Nestor Serrano and Stephen Kronish
8:00PM – 9:00PM commentary by Tim Iacofano and Shohreh Aghdashloo
9:00PM – 10:00PM commentary by Roger Cross and Bryan Spicer
12:00AM – 1:00AM commentary by Jon Cassar and Sean Callery
1:00AM – 2:00AM commentary by Paul Gadd and Ken Kobett
4:00AM – 5:00AM commentary by Matt Michnovetz and Duppy Demetris
6:00AM – 7:00AM commentary by Bob Cochran and Scott Powell

Although some of the episodes selected for commentaries seem a bit odd (there are no commentaries for episodes 12 or 13, two of the best episodes of the series after the final two) and the list of participants sadly lack any of the veteran cast members from the series (Mary Lynn Rajskub who plays Chloe is the only cast member to do a commentary who didn’t make there debut on the show this year), but than it does include commentaries on the first and finale episodes.

Other extras exclusive to the US release is a Series 4/5 bridge or Series 5 prequel, which has been made during the filming of Series 5, and a Series 5 trailer. If I had the money and the ability to play U.S. discs, my copy would be on pre-order right now.

DVD News & Views

American visitors are sick to the back teeth of news regarding the UK release of series four, since you won’t get yours until Christmas, but since good things come to thoose who wait, as I will explain, you shouldn’t. The UK DVD is out tomorrow, and as I reported last week it will have atleast two, and unfortunately from reports from forum members who had there copies delivered early, that’s all it’s got. So two, not bad, except other information I’ve been getting, along with posts on the official Fox forum suggests the U.S. release will have as many as 12 (or two per disc), so if any UK visitors can bare to wait and can play region 1 dvd’s I’d advise waiting for the U.S. DVD. I myself can’t stand to wait for longer than I have already, nor can I play U.S. DVD’s, so I’ll be up tomorrow, waiting for the post and my copy and I’ll have a review up within the next week.

On a last, self-serving note, visitors may be interested to know that I, the Site and the 24 DVD, got a mention in former BBC writer William Gallagher’s DVD Review Podcast, if you’ve got a spare ten minutes or so it makes for a good listen.

DVD Confusion

Previously I posted details of special features that would be included on the Series Four DVD (due out 8th of August). The notable absentee was episode commentaries, because at the time there wasn’t any news of them, but I like most fans did, thought this meant episodes and participants were still to be finalised, after all these have usually been the last details we get about a DVD release. Unfortunately it would appear that isn’t the reason. Three leading DVD magazines have all reviews 24: Series Four on DVD, and all have made comment about the lack of commentaries and the BBFC has yet to classify any. So either they are leaving it unbelievably late, or there will be no commentaries included. I fear it’s the later. If anything changes I’ll have it up here soon as I get it. To take the sting out of there being no commentaries, there have been two new extras added to the release since I lasted posted details. First off it will include the 20 minute short film that Nissan made and cut up into 15 second or so segments to show during the shows run. There is also 24: Conspiracy, the made for mobile 24 spin-off series.
