Online Reaction to First Trailer

“Well, the good people at the Fox Network are doing their best to get loyal 24 fans into a tizzy. I hope they don’t think we’d forget all about the show because we have to wade through those pesky new fall programs that are NOT graced with all things Bauer? Jeez Louise, Fox – you’ve got to know that we all have those calendars, patiently marking down the days until January 14, 2007 8:00 PM ET. Instead of big red Xs, we’re using thumbnail photos of President Logan, a circle with a line through it superimposed over his scowling visage. So, though fans need absolutely no reminding, … Part of the fun of waiting for anything is to kibitz, commiserate and speculate on possible plot lines. Well, today, October 24, Fox is launching a sneaky peeky 24 trailer to tease us with glimpses of Season Six. They are also broadcasting it on the News Corporation’s Panasonic Astrovision screen in New York City’s Times Square. News Corporation is the Fox network’s parent company.

Wow, six years already? Could 24 be headed toward the category of long running shows such as The Simpsons, Seventh Heaven, Cheers, and ER? We’d love to see our crew be around for a long time, yet they only seem to thrive on disaster. That can’t be too good for their collective blood pressure or morale in general. And you know the general mood and characters are a bit too somber for real life.”

“At the end of 24’s fifth season, Bauer was taken hostage by Chinese agents and spirited away into the hold of a cargo ship bound for China. The trailer promises to give a glimpse into what will become of the tough guy at the hands of his captors.

In August, 24 won three Emmys–Best Drama, Best Actor, and Best Directing. 24 returns Sunday, January 14, with a two-night, four-hour season premiere.”

Sutherland and 24 triumph at Emmys

“US counter-terrorist drama 24 has been named as the best drama series in the annual Emmy awards in Los Angeles, with star Kiefer Sutherland also picking up the best actor award.

The innovative real-time drama and Sutherland, who plays rogue agent Jack Bauer, had been nominated for the top awards for the last five years, but finally got the recognition it deserved last night in TV’s equivalent of the Oscars.

24 received five Emmys in total on the night …”

Kiefer ready for more abuse

“… Bauer, or rather actor Kiefer Sutherland, looked tanned, relaxed and — very unlike Jack — happy at Fox’s press tour party …

Sutherland, who stood with his requisite pack of Camel cigarettes in his pocket …

‘We just got the first scripts,’ he told a scrum of reporters.

He was typically sketchy on other details, but admitted things look pretty grim for Jack.

‘He’s at the end of his line. Something’s going to have to really rejuvenate him from the position that he’s in,’ said Sutherland, ‘otherwise he’s just going to be dead.’

He added that it will be interesting this coming season, which starts again in January, ‘to come from a really deep dark place and actually try to come up instead of starting from an up position and trying to go down.’ …

… Some reporters were surprised Sutherland was at the press tour at all. His show is going into a sixth season and he’s made his millions from syndication and DVD sales. This is usually the point where a big-shot like Sutherland bails, at least until that farewell season is announced.

Still, the Emmy-nominated actor feels a certain loyalty to TV critics.

‘We wouldn’t have been picked up if it wasn’t for this group five years ago,’ he said.

‘We were on the fence and teetering off it in the wrong direction.’ He added that 24 ‘has been the most amazing experience of my career to date.'”

Sutherland talks more season six

“… While Bauer was being whisked off by the Chinese for crimes he committed in Season 4, Sutherland won’t spoil whether or not the series will be set in China this year.

‘I don’t want to ruin any of that,’ he says … Even with an additional bit of prodding, Sutherland still was tight with the details on the new season, …

‘We always seem to run into great problems when we shoot on a plane, even if it’s an hour program … If I was to be in China, I would stay there for the day.’

The ironic part is that in real time, the Jack Bauer character should be close to 60 since every season, there’s usually a one to two year jump in between. Sutherland laughs though and notes, ‘I’m probably now my age [on the show]. I think I started out a little younger.’ …

… ‘One of the fantastic things about our writers, is the options are always open for everything,’ says Sutherland. ‘In certain areas and I think one of the discussions about 24 that I think has been interesting is that people have a serious moral dilemma with some of the things that Jack Bauer has done. So that rides a very thin line already. So we’ll see.’ …

… Meanwhile, there’s already been talk that a 24 movie will be shot next summer on the show’s hiatus and Sutherland gave hints as to what the format might be.

‘It’s something we really really want to make,’ he adds, noting that the movie would be a standalone event that wouldn’t tie in with existing storylines happening on the TV show. ‘The real key difference would be, the 24 film, would be a two hour representation of a 24 hour day. It would be the first thing we didn’t do in real time …’

Sutherland Talks Next Season

“Kiefer Sutherland revealed Sunday in an interview with a British newspaper that expect the sixth season of ’24’ to be more an inward journey …

The move follows in the wake of the show’s fifth season which , whilst still dealing with a country-threatening plot, was more about the characters than the large scale terrorism of earlier years. Consequently the series scored it’s best reviews and ratings yet for that season, along with twelve nominations for the upcoming Emmy Awards.”
