What a difference a day makes

“He’s the star of the acclaimed 24 and tonight he’ll save America one more time as the latest series reaches its climax. But life hasn’t always smiled on Kiefer Sutherland. After Brat Pack superstardom his career nosedived, then Julia Roberst ditched him. So he sought solace in rodeo riding and drink before finally finding redemption, he tells Stephanie Merritt.”

An in-depth interview with Kiefer from Sunday Newspaper The Observer, well worth a read.

24 Film in London?

“Kiefer Sutherland has revealed that a movie version of his hit US TV show 24 is to be made in London. The actor … told chat show host Jonathan Ross about his plans on his BBC One show, which airs on Friday.

‘We’re working on that,’ he said. ‘We’ll shoot the film here. We’re really excited about it.’

‘In the US, 24 was slow to catch on but in the UK it was big so Fox stuck with it, so thank you Britain.'”

Saving the World Pays Well for ’24’ Star

Firstly apologises, i’ve behind with site updates and news, it’s been kind of crazy. I’ll do my best to catch up, starting with this news, which everyone else has posted, but i’ll post here for the sake of my news archives being complete.

“… Kiefer Sutherland has inked a multifaceted deal with 20th Century Fox Television …, which is set to begin in June, calls for the actor to continue on the hit Fox drama for three more years and includes a two-year development deal for Sutherland’s soon-to-be-launched production banner.

Details on the deal were sketchy, but sources pegged the acting portion alone at more than $40 million for the three seasons, which could make Sutherland the highest-paid actor in a drama series.

While the deal with Sutherland locks him in for three additional years beyond the current fifth season of “24,” the 20th TV/Imagine TV-produced show so far has been picked up for one additional season.

Under the pact, Sutherland also will be elevated from a co-executive producer to executive producer on “24” next season alongside Joel Surnow, Robert Cochran, Howard Gordon and Evan Katz …”

24 Hour party person

“Ever think you’re having a bad day? Then console yourself by considering what a bad day entails for the world’s most celebrated and beleaguered counter-terrorist agent Jack Bauer, …So far, Bauer has seen his wife murdered by his lover, had his daughter kidnapped, become a heroin addict to infiltrate a drugs gang, and been forced to execute his own boss in order to avert a chemical attack by terrorists. He’s even been pronounced dead himself on a couple of occasions. And he is never allowed respite.

As the eagerly anticipated new series kicks off, it’s going to be just as gratifyingly ruthless. In the show, Bauer grapples with an apocalyptic plot over a 24-hour time frame, which divides into 24 episodes. Sutherland has described the cult series as ‘Dynasty on crack’, which is apposite; this time, two familiar faces … didn’t make it past the first hour.

At this rate, you have to ask yourself if even Jack is safe. Sutherland, 39, who has built an extraordinary career renaissance on his portrayal of the driven agent, refuses to offer any guarantees – even though he stars in and executive produces the shows.

‘I’ll be happy to die,’ he says, sounding relaxed at the prospect of his character’s demise. ‘In fact, it’s important to the show that Jack eventually dies. And that he does so when you least expect it. I’ve always said that if there comes a point in the show where to kill Jack is what serves the show best, then so be it, and I think every actor who has been on the show feels the same way about their role.’ …

… Just keep your fingers crossed he’s still with us by lunchtime.”

Kiefer, Eva & Me

“Sssssh! A nobody with a radio is telling us to please be quiet. And no flash photography. The cameras are about to roll. This is so exciting. We are a part of history. Well, not really. We know this. And we know we’re speaking in italics a lot. We can’t help ourselves. We know the difference between fact and fiction, person and persona. But still. When is this movie going to be released? We will get the DVD. Sssssh!

And . . . action! Kiefer heads down the street, toward Lafayette Square. He is dressed in gray pants and a white shirt. He walks purposefully and . . . straight.

‘Cut!’

The scene is repeated, again and again. It isn’t much of a scene. We wish something would happen. We wish Gabrielle would come running up and maybe throw her arms in the air, and a car would zoom by, and a bad guy would flop out, dead. Something. But no, it’s just Kiefer walking, which from our vantage point is really just a tiny head bobbing.”

Jack Bauer’s big screen plans

“One of Empire’s finest was in LA recently, where we got the chance to sit down and have a chat with one of the world’s unluckiest men. Yes, that’s right, Jack Bauer, who has had at least four unbelievably bad days at this point – or at least his alter-ego Kiefer Sutherland – took him out of his busy schedule to talk to us about the oft-discussed 24 movie. ‘We have talked about it. Our biggest problem right now is getting the writers to find enough time to write a screenplay,’ said the star … But it may not be easy distilling the series down into two hours, and making it big enough to fill cinema screens – something that Sutherland is all too aware of.

‘There are certain inherent challenges in trying to make something in real time over a two-hour period that’s going to allow enough to be engaging. I certainly believe that they’re going to accomplish that, but I don’t think that’s going to happen…well, it might happen for next year – for next year’s hiatus. We’re not sure yet, but they have been working on it.’

As Johnny Depp found out in Nick Of Time a real-time two hour film ain’t easy, but if anyone can come up with a way to do it it’s the people behind 24. With Season Five currently gearing up, it looks like a big screen outing for Bauer and pals could be just a year or two away.”

‘River Queen’ stars back for NZ premiere

“After sickness, numerous injuries, the dismissal of its director, a car crash involving a lead actor, bad weather and rumours of a curse, the movie River Queen is finally on track for a New Zealand world premiere. Distributor Twentieth Century Fox announced the premiere would take place in Wanganui on January 24 next year, … Samantha Morton and Kiefer Sutherland will come back to Wanganui for the premiere.

Snippets of the troubled film, billed as the most ambitious New Zealand story ever attempted, … displayed the slick, high production values of an American blockbuster … the final cost of the film came in over its $23 million budget.

The film, a 19th century drama about a woman’s search for her lost son, is set in the 1860s New Zealand wars.

… Continuous rain in the first week [of filming] saw river levels rise and temperatures drop, causing sickness among cast and crew …

… Morton clashed with director Vincent Ward and also fell ill, causing her to remain off-set for six weeks. Main actor Cliff Curtis also lost control of his SUV while driving to the River Queen set, hitting a parked car and coming to rest in the lounge of a house in Otaki.

Problems continued when Ward was sacked in October, but was later reinstated … in time to oversee the final scenes and post-production …, he said, ‘The main thing for me is that she’s very excited about the movie.’ …

The film gets its first international exposure at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, where it hopes to attract the attention of North American critics and distributors.

Ward, was philosophical about all the troubles that have plagued production, ‘That’s part of the legacy of Apocalypse Now and that’s part of the legacy of this film.’ ”

News that Kiefer’s latest film role in ‘River Queen’ will make it to the screen after being hounded by problems.
